A Manga War Saga: Milimoss Saga
Amidst intricate politics between the kingdoms in a world of magic, discover the era of war as Milimoss Nonette heeds his call of duty in this fantasy light novel adaptation.
An average office worker reincarnates as Milimoss Nonette, the seventh prince of the meager Nonette Kingdom. But that’s not all new life has in plan for him — he also holds the title of Marshal of the National Armed Forces at the age of 12. Milimoss Saga — Chronicles of a Reincarnated Young Prince is a fantasy isekai manga which starts with a reincarnation trope most of us are familiar with but manages to capture its readers with its intricate world-building and strategic warfare.
Our main character, Milimoss, is the youngest prince of the miniscule Nonette kingdom, whose past life was that of an ordinary salesman from our world. The story immediately kicks off with a battle between the two largest countries in this world of magic, Magic Empire, with its magic attacks and tools, and the Holy Knight Kingdom, whose knights have their bodies strengthened with so-called Holy Skills.
However, the Nonette kingdom itself is not involved in this battle; rather, Milimoss and the aged soldier Alexem, watch through the eyes of a magical tool as a rite of passage for Nonette princes. Guising themselves as citizens from the Empire, Milimoss and Alexem loot the equipment of the fallen soldiers at the end of the battle to study them, and that is when they meet the Princess of the Holy Knight Kingdom, who boasts quite the mouthful name, Parubera Elegyamanya Mudu. By taking care of her companion who has fallen in battle, Milimoss gains her gratitude and is bestowed with a dagger with the coat-of-arms of her kingdom. However, little does our hero know the real meaning behind that gift.
The pace of the beginning is a tad slow. The story takes its time explaining its setting and characters, such as the workings of the Holy Skills themselves and Milimoss’ current position as Marshal, which was bestowed upon him by the King due to his unprecedented capabilities for both magic and Holy Skills. However, these explanations never feel boring to plow through, and once readers go a few chapters in, they will get to see Milimoss in his own first war.
Milimoss Saga does not shy away from realistic depictions of the intricacies of combat and the woes of war. Readers might think that the serious setting implies a somber atmosphere all around, but the series is light-hearted in tone on the contrary, showing quite the comedic contrast between the relaxed Milimoss, who is mostly driven for his curiosity of magic, and those around him, who believe he holds immense potential. From an artistic perspective as well, the characters and background are aesthetically pleasing, with detailed shading that befits a fantasy title, as well as gripping action in its warfare scenes.
All in all, Milimoss Saga is definitely a fresh breath of air among the quite oversaturated isekai titles, since it does not employ the same tropes of other series under the same genre. Readers who stick through the elaborate introduction are in for an engrossing experience of warfare and fantasy. The series also relies on its rather overpowered hero, which can be either a dealmaker or dealbreaker for some; however, it is a definitely recommended title for military and fantasy manga fans alike.
